A dog that hasn't had enough mental stimulation is often more exhausting to live with than a dog that hasn't had enough physical exercise. On a rainy Swedish summer day when a long walk isn't happening, indoor enrichment activities can make a real difference to how settled your dog is by evening. These are the approaches that work consistently, without requiring specialist equipment.

A dog's nose is its primary sense. Giving a dog something to sniff and search for is genuinely tiring in a way that a walk around the block often isn't. The simplest version of this is hiding small amounts of dry food or treats around a room and letting the dog find them. Start with easy hiding spots and increase the difficulty as the dog gets the idea.
A snuffle mat formalises this same activity. The irregular ridges and pockets slow the dog down and require it to work through the mat methodically rather than clearing it in one sweep. For dogs that eat too fast, it also slows down mealtimes in a way that's better for digestion.

Short training sessions of five to ten minutes are more effective than long ones for most dogs. Working on a new command or refreshing an existing one uses mental energy without requiring space. Keep the sessions positive and end before the dog gets bored. A dog that ends a training session wanting more is in a better state than one that's been pushed to the point of switching off.

In summer, when it's warm indoors as well as out, frozen treats are a useful tool. Freezing a Kong toy filled with wet food or plain yoghurt gives a dog something to work on for 20-30 minutes and keeps it cool at the same time. This is particularly useful for dogs that struggle with heat.
