The harness versus collar question comes up regularly in customer emails. Both work. The choice depends on your dog's size, how it walks on the lead, and whether it has any neck or trachea issues. This is a practical breakdown of the differences, without the marketing language.

For dogs that walk calmly on a loose lead and don't pull, a flat collar is a perfectly adequate attachment point for a lead. It's also the right place for an ID tag, which is a legal requirement in Sweden for dogs over three months old. The collar should sit snugly enough that you can fit two fingers underneath it but not so loose that it can slip over the dog's head.

When a dog pulls on a lead attached to a collar, the pressure goes directly onto the trachea and the structures around it. For small breeds with naturally narrow tracheas, like Yorkshire terriers and Chihuahuas, this is a real concern. For any dog that pulls consistently, a harness distributes the pressure across the chest and shoulders instead.

A front-clip harness, where the lead attaches to a ring on the chest rather than the back, gives you more steering control on a pulling dog. The dog's momentum is redirected toward you rather than forward. It's not a training tool on its own, but it makes the walk more manageable while you're working on the pulling.

A harness that doesn't fit correctly is worse than a collar. Too loose and the dog can back out of it. Too tight and it restricts movement at the shoulder, which causes discomfort and, over time, can affect gait.
